One Finger Zen (+ What To Do When Your Master Cuts Your Zen Finger Off!)
PRACTICAL ENLIGHTENMENT
In the story the master transmits his Zen with the gesture of holding up one finger but the student, unable to make the jump and not ready for enlightenment, merely imitates the gesture of the master. When the master sees him teaching another using his imitation one finger zen he cuts off the student’s finger in an instant. The student, in a state of shock goes to flee but the master catches his attention and shows him his one finger zen once more. This time the student's mind is sufficiently distracted and an enlightenment breakthrough is possible.
